What is ESAT?
ESAT stands for Engineering and Science Admissions Test. It is the new admissions test required by the University of Oxford (from 2024 onwards) for applicants to Physics, Engineering, and Materials Science, replacing the previous PAT (Physics Aptitude Test). ESAT is also used by Cambridge and Imperial College London for similar courses.
- Format: Computer-based, taken at authorized test centers worldwide
- Content: Multiple modules (Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, Physics, Chemistry, Biology). Oxford Physics applicants take Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, and Physics modules.
- When: Usually in October, as part of the university application process
- Who needs it: Applicants to Oxford Physics, Engineering Science, and Materials Science; also used by Cambridge and Imperial for science/engineering
- Why the change: To standardize admissions tests across top UK universities and modernize the process
